Ground Control Tactics

Officers must have the confidence and knowledge to control a force encounter wherever it may go. Statistically, officer response to an assaultive subject is most likely to involve a ground escape or control position, rather than standing positions alone. Learn practical methods to control a dynamic event and turn the tide of the encounter against an aggressive subject. These reality-based techniques were specifically developed by law enforcement officers to suit the needs of police, security, and corrections professionals. This course will enable officers to control combative subjects when reasonable, and skillfully avoid grounded encounters when it is not.

The focus of this course is on active countermeasures gained through a functional understanding of timing, leverage, and distance management. These skills are a necessary base for officers who seek improved self-defense and subject control by means of empty hand technique.

Topics covered will include gross motor techniques which allow a smaller officer to gain advantage of a larger and more aggressive subject. Ā These techniques are modified from the popular martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and specially tuned for law enforcement application.

Course objectives include but are not limited to:

  • Develop skills in utilizing the elements of timing, leverage and distance management
  • Learn to gain positions of advantage against a fully resistant subject
  • Learn gross motor techniques to escape from an attacker
  • Manage breathing and energy output under physical stress
  • Improve functional strength and flexibility

Students should be prepared for a wide range of sustained, moderate to high intensity physical activity throughout the course. Ā Upon completion, officers will be capable of appropriately reacting to assaultive subjects at extreme close quarters.
